How to solve
A fraction is in lowest terms when numerator and denominator share no factor bigger than 1. Divide both by their GCF in one step, or cancel small common factors repeatedly.
Steps
- Find the GCF of numerator and denominator.
- Divide both by that GCF.
- Check that nothing bigger than 1 still divides both.
Example
Simplify 18/24.
- GCF(18, 24) = 6.
- 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4.
Answer: 3/4
