How to solve

A fraction is in lowest terms when numerator and denominator share no factor bigger than 1. Divide both by their GCF in one step, or cancel small common factors repeatedly.

Steps

  1. Find the GCF of numerator and denominator.
  2. Divide both by that GCF.
  3. Check that nothing bigger than 1 still divides both.

Example

Simplify 18/24.

  1. GCF(18, 24) = 6.
  2. 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4.

Answer: 3/4
