How to solve

Like addition, subtraction of fractions requires matching piece sizes. Once both fractions share a denominator, subtract the numerators and simplify — the denominator stays the common unit size.

Steps

  1. Find a common denominator and rewrite both fractions.
  2. Subtract the numerators; keep the common denominator.
  3. Simplify the result to lowest terms.

Example

Compute 5/6 − 1/4.

  1. Common denominator: 12.
  2. Rewrite: 10/12 − 3/12.
  3. Subtract: 7/12.

Answer: 7/12
