How to solve

y'' − (r1+r2)y' + r1 r2 y = 0 has roots r1, r2.

Steps

  1. Form r² − (sum)r + product = 0.
  2. Factor or use the quadratic formula.

Example

y'' − 5y' + 6y = 0

  1. (r−2)(r−3)=0.
  2. r=2,3.

Answer: 2,3
