Differential Equations

How to solve

An equilibrium is a constant solution: the derivative is zero, so solve f(y) = 0.

Steps

  1. Set the right-hand side equal to zero.
  2. Solve for y.
  3. That constant function solves the equation forever.

Example

y' = 3(y − 5). Equilibrium?

  1. 3(y − 5) = 0.
  2. y = 5.

Answer: 5
