How to solve

The derivative of a sum is the sum of derivatives: apply the power rule to every term and drop constants.

Steps

  1. d/dx of axⁿ is n·a·xⁿ⁻¹.
  2. Differentiate each term separately.
  3. Constants vanish.

Example

d/dx of 2x³ − 5x² + 4x − 7

  1. 2x³ → 6x².
  2. −5x² → −10x; 4x → 4; −7 → 0.

Answer: 6x^2-10x+4
