When direct substitution gives 0/0, factor and cancel the common factor, then substitute.
Steps
- Factor numerator (often difference of squares).
- Cancel (x − a), then plug in a.
Example
lim x→2 (x²−4)/(x−2)
- (x−2)(x+2)/(x−2) → x+2 → 4.
Answer: 4
