How to solve

Isolate y to read off the slope and intercept directly.

Steps

  1. Move the x-term to the right side.
  2. Divide every term by the y-coefficient.
  3. Write as y = mx + b.

Example

Rewrite 2x + 4y = 8.

  1. 4y = −2x + 8.
  2. y = −x/2 + 2 → here coefficients are integers when they divide evenly.

Answer: y=-x/2+2
