How to solve

A graph makes slope concrete: the steepness is how much y changes for each step in x. A slope triangle drawn on the line shows rise (vertical) and run (horizontal).

Steps

  1. Pick two clear lattice points on the line (or use the labeled points).
  2. Count the vertical change (rise) and horizontal change (run).
  3. Compute m = rise/run and simplify. Watch signs.

Example

A line passes through (1, 2) and (3, 5).

  1. Rise = 5 − 2 = 3.
  2. Run = 3 − 1 = 2.
  3. m = 3/2.

Answer: 3/2
