How to solve

Split the radicand into a perfect square times what is left; the square root of the perfect square comes outside.

Steps

  1. Find the largest perfect square dividing the radicand.
  2. Write √(k²·f) = k√f.
  3. Check that what stays inside has no square factor.

Example

Simplify √12.

  1. 12 = 4 · 3.
  2. √12 = √4 · √3 = 2√3.

Answer: 2sqrt(3)
