How to solve

Subtracting a polynomial flips every sign inside it; then combine like terms.

Steps

  1. Rewrite the subtraction as adding the opposite of each term.
  2. Group like powers of x.
  3. Combine coefficients.

Example

(3x² + 2x − 1) − (x² − 4x + 2)

  1. 3x² − x² = 2x².
  2. 2x + 4x = 6x; −1 − 2 = −3.

Answer: 2x^2+6x-3
